Episode 1: Metal Thickness

Gauge is the unit of measurement that we use to measure steel thickness. 26-Gauge is thicker than 29-Gauge. How is that possible? Well, in the land of metal siding and roofing, the lower the number, the thicker the steel. This comes from the way steel thickness was originally measured. The base measurement was from a 1” thick steel plate, from there thickness was divided up into fractions in descending order from 1/16” all the way to 1/29”. Therefore, when you have 1/26” thickness, it’s more than 1/29” thickness. For a more in-depth explanation, head over here.

Pole Buildings, well most of them, have steel as the siding and the roofing. A standard building has 29-Gauge if you want to upgrade to a thicker metal you get 26-Gauge. There’s nothing wrong with 29-Gauge, and in fact, that’s the typical industry standard. However, we do offer 26-Gauge, and that’s a heck of an upgrade. A 25% upgrade, in fact. Why would you want a thicker steel? Well, there’s a lot of things that we would like to have 25% more of. For example, icing- wouldn’t you want 25% more icing on your cake? What about 25% more hair! Are you catching our drift? But, in all seriousness, that 25% helps the metal become more resistant to dents, dings, and damage.
